Burial Options FAQ
Find quick answers to common questions about burial planning and traditional funeral options.
What is a burial vault, and is it legally required?
A burial vault (or outer burial container) is a reinforced concrete or steel box that encloses the casket in the ground. While there is no state law requiring a vault, almost all cemeteries require one to prevent the grave from sinking over time.
Can I purchase a grave space in advance?
Yes. Purchasing a cemetery plot (grave space) in advance is a very common preneed selection. It allows you to lock in the land price and choose a location near other family members.
What are military burial benefits?
Eligible veterans are entitled to a free burial in a national cemetery, including the grave space, a government marker (headstone), and military honors. These benefits do not cover the cost of a casket or private funeral director services.
